The Biden Administration Wants to Effectively END School Choice

Joe Biden is embracing a progressive stance on public schools and fully intends to crack down on them after his inauguration.

Naturally, school unions and far-left activists are praising the move as one that will increase funding and resources for public school districts. Others, however, warn that it is ultimately poor children who will be shafted by the move as they would have no alternative to a failing public school.

Even more moderate Democrats are warning the Obama-era VP not to cut funding for non-profit charter schools. Many of these schools have done a good job helping minority students and so have strong support in the African-American and Latino communities.

It seems that the voices of reason aren’t going to win the fight. Becky Pringle, the head of the powerful National Education Association, has proclaimed that she knows the NEA has a partner in former Biden. The fact that Jill Biden is a member of this teacher’s union dramatically increases the odds that the incoming president will be amenable to whatever it wants.

The presumed President-elect has already called for a ban on federal funding for all charter schools run by for-profit companies, a move that could decimate over 10% of the nation’s charter schools at once. To make matters worse, the campaign’s Biden-Sanders Unity Task Force is calling for measures that would condition federal funding for non-profit charter schools on a district’s review. Such a measure could make it impossible for new charter schools to open even if the parents would like to have one in their area.

President Donald Trump has called school choice the “civil rights statement of the decade,” rightly noting that all children must have access to quality education. Biden’s move to strip parents of the right to choose where to educate their children makes it clear that the Democratic Party is willing to do whatever it takes to please its backers.

If the public-school system was doing a good job educating its students, parents would not be pulling their kids from the system. School choice makes it possible for every parent in America to help their child get the best possible education. But this is not the Democratic Party’s agenda. Teachers’ unions that oppose charter schools are operating as political partisans — and Biden owes them a favor.

  1. Biden’s boss, 0bummer, was an abject failure as pressidents so We certainly could enact more from this goon. Years ago, he had hair implant surgery to replace hair on his balding head I always suspected that some of these seemed went too deep and resulted in some brain disorder. anyway I don’t think he’s 1O0% recovered.
