Texas Gov. Refuses to Pay State House Dems Who Walked Out to Block GOP Vote

Texas House Democrats walked out on Sunday night to stop the state from passing a new voting rights bill. Governor Greg Abbott has responded by docking their pay.

He tweeted Monday, “I will veto Article 10 of the budget passed by the legislature. Article 10 funds the legislative branch. No pay for those who abandon their responsibilities. Stay tuned.”

The proposed Senate Bill 7 aimed to implement stricter mail-in voting requirements and stop drive-thru voting. Democrats called it a Jim Crow 2.0 law, using the same terms thrown at Georgia’s recent voting rights law.

The Texas bill seeks to improve voting integrity; Jim Crow laws legalized the separation of black and white people in parts of the country prior to the civil rights movement.

There’s a big difference. The Jim Crow laws were about race. The Texas voting bill is about methods of voting. It does not discriminate based on the color of anyone’s skin.

The vast majority of Americans fully support voting reform bills that help increase the integrity of their democracy. After the mess following the 2020 election, it’s clear there is room for improvement.

But Texas Democrats used the race card because they did not have the votes to block the legislation. Abbott will have none of it. Instead of giving up, he’s getting tough and doing what he can to oppose the walkout.

Texas is one of the most conservative states in the nation. If Texas can’t pass a voting rights bill because lawmakers walk out, what does that say for the rest of the country?

Abbott’s approach attacks the real motive behind much of the Democrat push back — money. If they walk out over financial support they may or may not receive due to the bill, perhaps withholding some of their money will turn things around.

And even if not, the point has been made. Texas will not support lawmakers who won’t do their job.

It makes you kind of wish Abbott was running more than just Texas. The Lone Star State leader has just led one of the state’s most conservative agendas. As he recently tweeted, the state passed legislation to secure the border, support police, expand Second Amendment rights, defend religious liberty and protect life. Abbott also joined other leaders like Florida’s Ron Desantis in refusing to implement the draconian lockdown orders seen in places like New York, California, Michigan, and others.

This is basically the exact opposite of what the Biden administration has been doing in 2021. While RINOs like Paul Ryan slam Trump and those who support him, Texas is getting stuff done. Why can’t conservatives in Washington follow their lead?

Yes, maybe Democrats would walk out. If only they wouldn’t come back!

But at least the point would be obvious to all Americans. The left’s current agenda is to bankrupt and weaken America, not to make it great again.

Biden’s $6 trillion budget is not going to happen. Not to mention that it proposes taxpayer funded abortions, among other ethical issues.

We’re not talking about just a budget. We’re talking about the future of our nation. Like Abbott, we need leaders who will bounce back with tough actions when opponents walk away.

  1. The governor’s action is not just an example, it should also serve as a doctrine!

If the US as a whole wont follow this lead, china will take America without firing a shot.

    1. I live in Florida and I am so proud of Gov. Abbott for doing this. If the people who are elected to do a job for the country or state and they walk out and refuse to do their job, they absolutely should NOT be paid.
What would happen to you if you walked out of your job?
      #ABBOTT

    2. Gov Abbott and Gov DeSantis are great great leaders of Texas and Flordia. If the rest of the country would wake up and follow these two, our country would be great again. If Biden admin is not removed immediately, were not going to have a country. Biden stands for destroying our nation, not making anything at all great again…impeach the whole bunch of them.

  2. Let’s fire all the democrats for not doing their job, like it or not. If a normal worker does not show up for work because he does not like what they want him to do, he is fired. Lets got rid of them all and for good. We have enough problems now days, so let’s eliminate another. People who want to destroy Texas. Ship them to New York or California.

    1. Don’t send them to ny. We have a governor that is doing a good job of destroying things himself

  3. Yes Governor Abbot is absolutely right in Docking Their pay. Walking out on a job and actually not doing what they are suppose to be doing is Good reasons to Fire them. I pray that more states jump on Gov. Abbott’s Bandwagon!!!
