Far-left Senator Bernie Sanders is warning anyone who will listen that the “very fabric of democracy is in danger” if the Democrats don’t pass progressive priorities such as “taxing the rich” and “addressing climate change” in the Build Back Better bill.
The Vermont Senator goes on to note that he believes the American people will not go for it that the government can work for them if the Democratic Party, which controls both houses of Congress and the White House, cannot use their power to pass what liberals like to call a “highly popular” bill.
The truth is, the failure of this bill shows more than anything that democracy is thriving rather than in danger. When voters “elected” Joe Biden, various senators, and the members of the House of Representatives, deliberately did not give Democrats more than the smallest possible majority.
What’s more, they gave the GOP even more representatives in the House, cutting into the Democrat majority in that chamber to prevent the passage of overtly progressive legislation.
It’s also telling that voters eschewed progressive presidential candidates in 2020, rather they “selected” someone they believed would be a moderate candidate. Truth be told, the overwhelming majority of Americans are leery of progressive priorities that would reshape the nation.
While some certainly would embrace the extra money and benefits supplied by some progressive bills, there are also provisions such as the one that would have given the IRS the right to find out about any transaction of $600 or more.
Furthermore, polls repeatedly show that the overwhelming majority of Americans don’t approve of the way the Biden administration is managing the economy, which means that they’re likely very skeptical of additional Democrat attempts to mess with the economy at a time when it’s already teetering on the brink.
Granted, there are many far-left voters in the nation who embrace progressive legislation. Many journalists are among their ranks, including David Sirota and Alex Gibney from Rolling Stone, both of whom recently warned that the Democrats’ failure to pass the Build Back Better agenda would lead to a Republican victory in the midterm elections next year.
However, the truth is that the overwhelming majority of Americans are not progressive. They don’t want progressive legislation, or they would have voted for progressive lawmakers a year ago. Most would prefer to do their best to lead successful lives with minimal government interference, rather than dealing with forced vaccine mandates, forced CRT teaching in public schools, additional taxes, or what have you.
Sadly, most people may not get their wish if even the pared-back bill is passed because, while many provisions are eliminated, the bill will dump an extra $1.75 trillion on the economy at a time when inflation is running rampant and companies are having a hard time getting workers to fill needed job positions.
But the Democrats don’t care. They’ll destroy the economy if they have to for power.
