An investigation is underway with both local and federal authorities, after a Los Angeles woman said she found more than 100 mail-in ballots abandoned on a sidewalk, while she walked her dog in West Hollywood.
The woman who discovered them, Christina Repaci, told Fox 11 Los Angeles, that she was walking her dog in West Hollywood in the weekend and came across a U.S Postal box which was full of envelopes. She quickly realized they were mail-in ballots and started to record her finding on her phone.
Repaci said she took the ballots home and counted 104 mail-in ballots – she contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and other agencies when she realized what they were.
The Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office arranged for the ballots to be picked up from Repaci’s address and they said in a statement that the mail tray contained 104 unopened, outbound mail-in ballots. The Office added that new ballots had been re-issued to those voters who had been affected.
“Early signs indicate that this was an incident of mail theft and not a directed attempt at disrupting the election,” it said. “We are cooperating with the United States Postal Service and law enforcement to investigate.”
The California primary is scheduled for June 7, voters will decide between challengers for incumbent Governor Gavin Newsome and will also be voting between candidates for U.S Senate, State Senate, attorney general, U.S representative in Congress and other local races.
Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti is also up for re-election this year, as well as the seats for city controller, city attorney and City Council.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, a Democrat, is also up for re-election and has been fighting with the county over vaccine mandates for deputies, amid the Los Angeles crime wave and huge spike in homelessness.
“If it happens to someone else [and] they don’t know what to do, they’ll just put them in a dumpster or throw them in the trash,” Repaci told Fox 11, fearing she might not be the only one to find abandoned ballots. “I just don’t think it should have been this hard to figure out what to do with legal ballots. This is a country of freedom, and our votes should matter and something like this should never happen.”
This is not out of the ordinary, however, after the 2020 presidential election saw a plethora of anomalies concerning mail-in ballots.
The recent find by Repaci raises questions about the coming California elections and the integrity surrounding it. Not to mention the Mid-Terms which are coming in November of this year.
The use of mail-in ballots is the top of the slippery slope, which can easily descend into election fraud.
