Leftist Author Claims Parental Rights Endangers Education and Democracy

A democracy is supposed to represent freedom. Under the United States Constitution, Americans can choose their political affiliation, religious beliefs, friends, and more. They also have the right to pass on their belief systems to their children.

Bizarrely, far-left author Jennifer Berkshire seems to think that such freedom poses a danger to democracy and the public education system. In a snarky tweet responding to a Republican representative, Berkshire stated that “this kind of thinking … is absolutely anathema to a democracy.” She provided no reason for her outrage. However, one can guess that her furor is directed at those parents who dare to teach their children conservative values while avoiding unsavory topics such as transgenderism, homosexuality, abortion, critical race theory, and other liberal talking points.

Many social media users called out Berkshire, pointing out that parents have the right to decide how their kids are raised. Sadly, the insane notion that parents should be allowed to kill their own offspring, but not impart their own values to them isn’t limited to a single far-left author.

Terry McAuliffe, who is running for governor of Virginia, recently told the press that parents should have no say in what schools teach their kids. President Joe Biden’s Education Secretary Miguel Cardona echoed the exact same sentiments, stating that parents should not be the “primary stakeholders” in their children’s education.

While these advocates clearly prefer to say that public schools should take the lead in deciding what children learn (or don’t learn), what they conveniently fail to note is the fact that the public school system is, for the most part, under the firm control of the Democrat Party. Teacher unions regularly give the Democrat Party tens of thousands of dollars in political donations. The party returns the favor whenever possible by showering the public school system with cash. This was clearly seen as Democrats struggled to reopen public schools earlier this year while teacher unions viciously opposed the move.

Parents have the right to raise their children as they see fit. It’s the parents, not the public-school teacher unions, who should have the final say in what children are and are not taught in the public school system. Unfortunately for liberal activists, allowing parents to have a say in their children’s education threatens liberal control over the education system. Thus, they are ridiculing those who dare to stand up to their agenda.
