President Joe Biden’s approval rating has been steadily tanking for the last few months. Even so, the depths to which it has plummeted now has at least one Democrat strategist describing the Biden presidency as an “apocalypse.”
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll found that 55% of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s performance while only 43% of voters approve. Of the 55% that disapproves of the Biden presidency, all but 9% strongly disapprove. At the same time, only a bit over half of voters who approve of the Biden presidency express strong approval.
It doesn’t stop there. A poll by Wednesday Economist/YouGov found that only 39% approve of President Biden’s job performance while nearly half of voters disapprove. This poll will likely be particularly alarming for Democrats as it shows that the loss of support comes from within its own ranks. While nearly 90% of Democrat voters said they approved of President Biden for the first half of the year, only 77% do so now. Inflation, the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are given as some of the main reasons for disapproval.
The poll makes it clear that, as one polling analyst has rightly noted, the honeymoon for the Biden presidency is over. When Biden was inaugurated in January 2021, many voters had high hopes for his administration. They looked forward to a more traditional approach to foreign policy as opposed to former President Trump’s tendency to ruffle feathers. Instead, these voters were left with the contempt of allies after President Biden failed to anticipate Afghanistan’s fast fall to the Taliban and plan properly for such a contingency.
Voters who thought the COVID-19 pandemic was on its last legs have been sorely disappointed to find the pandemic is now far from over. Those who hailed the Democrat’s plan to hand out even more free money in “survival payments” are now perplexed and upset to discover that inflation typically results when there is too much money chasing too few goods.
To make matters worse, it does not appear the Biden Administration is doing much to combat these problems. Rather, the nation’s rapport with France has taken a huge hit as President Biden announced it would help Australia build new submarines to keep China in check. COVID-19 vaccine mandates have angered tens of millions who rightly feel they have the right to make their own medical decisions. Progressive Democrats push for a whopping spending bill that would make inflation even worse than it is right now.
Here’s something important to keep in mind: Biden has no floor when it comes to ratings. It’s true that President Trump struggled in the polls as well, but there was a point where he could not sink any further thanks to his rabid fan base. Biden does not enjoy the same fanfare, even from his own partisans. If things keep going this way, he’s in for a rude awakening in the next election cycle.
