Republicans on the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees demanded in a letter on Wednesday that Dr. Anthony Fauci must answer questions about prior statements to Congress.
The director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has faced increased scrutiny following the public release of thousands of his emails related to the handling of the coronavirus. The letter was written and signed by Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer and Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan.
“House Republicans remain concerned about the origins of COVID-19, including the increasing possibility it originated and subsequently leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China,” wrote Comer and Jordan. “Using your own definition, it appears the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research at the WIV.”
They added, “On May 11, 2021, while testifying under oath, you stated, ‘[t]he NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the [WIV].’ This appears to contradict your 2012 statement regarding gain-of-function research and the WIV.”
The letter also asked Fauci to confirm the authenticity of a 2012 video on YouTube. “Can you please confirm the authenticity of the 2012 video accessible on the YouTube platform? Further, please verify that the 2014 grant description is accurate and explain the apparent discrepancy in your recent testimony?” the letter asked.
The letter isn’t the first call from legislators demanding answers from Fauci. In a separate letter written last week, Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and James Comer (R-Ky.) wrote to the chairs of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus and the House Oversight Committee. They argued it is imperative that Fauci appear before the lawmakers.
“It is now imperative that Dr. Fauci come before our Committees to provide information related to the origins of the novel coronavirus as well as the U.S. government’s role in funding research that may have contributed to the development of the novel coronavirus,” Scalise and Comer wrote.
“The American people have a right to know what our government knew about the origins of the pandemic and when it was known,” they added.
Both letters are on target and represent the views of many Americans. We need answers, and we need them now.
This is the doctor who told Americans to stay at home and to wear a mask for a year. Schools were closed. Businesses were ruined. The economy was ravaged. If this was based on anything other than a real risk to American lives, Fauci deserves more than a hearing before lawmakers — he deserves time in jail.
We’re talking about much more than a few misspoken words. Americans are wondering how America’s coronavirus expert was involved in a Wuhan lab before the pandemic, how COVID-19 was released, how much Fauci knew, when he knew it and whether he spoke the truth under oath on the subject. If not, the FIRE Fauci Act could be the least of his worries.
