Gavin Newsom Fiddles With Gender-Neutral Toy Aisles While California Burns

One would anticipate California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s attention would be consumed by the recent Alisal Fire that recently scorched more than 14,500 acres to the ground. But while California experiences yet another self-inflicted wildfire season, the Democrat appears more worried about making toy aisles gender-neutral.

“Traditionally, children’s toys and products have been categorized by a child’s gender. In retail, this has led to the proliferation of (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-geared toys in a ‘boys’ section and toys that direct girls to pursuits such as caring for a baby, fashion, and domestic life,” Assembly member Evan Low reportedly stated after authoring the legislation.

Gov. Newsom took time away from dealing with the ravaging wildfire that picked up speed in Central California to sign the latest woke liberal bill into law. The new law punishes retailers that use gender-specific language — “boy” or “girl” — to highlight product locations. Retailers can anticipate a $250 fine for the first offense and $500 for every time they use words such as boy, girl, male, or female thereafter.

Critics of associating toys with specific genders say it limits children’s thinking about who they are and what they can accomplish. However, the people losing their homes and loved ones to persistent year-after-year wildfires may not feel as passionate. Upwards of 200 firefighters were unable to contain the Alisal Fire as 25 mobile homes and 16 RVs were destroyed in Sacramento County by Oct. 12.

“The fire is burning in dense chaparral and is being pushed by strong winds and growing at a rapid rate of speed,” officials reported on Oct. 12 as wind gusts reached 70 mph.

Newsom abdicated responsibility for the devastating wildfires that have already torched more than 2.1 million acres in 2021. The far-left Democrat blames “climate change” for the fact that only California suffers increasingly horrific blazes. More pragmatic people point to the fact Golden State liberals banned logging on state lands nearly a half-century ago. Centrist and conservative lawmakers repeatedly tried to override left-wing radicals that refused to allow clear-cutting and replanting that also removed wildfire fuel. People like California Rep. Tom McClintock have been unable to garner enough support to right the ship despite the devastation.

“Forest fires, fueled by decades of pent-up overgrowth, are now increasing in their frequency and intensity and destruction,” Rep. McClintock reportedly said. “Excess timber will come out of the forest in one of only two ways. It is either carried out or it burns out.”

California’s wildfires were relatively infrequent during the 19th Century. Significant burns occurred less than once every 10 years until a couple of decades after logging on public lands was banned. During the 1990s, wildfire frequency increased and the West Coast state has suffered large blazes every single year since 2000. Last year, a record-breaking 4.3 million acres were destroyed and 2021 could be worse. While Gov. Gavin Newsom fiddles around with life-changing issues such as gender-neutral toys aisles, California burns.
